MY PERSPECTIVE  ON FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION.

Escapism. That’s sometimes the charge against Fantasy and Science Fiction. It’s not real—it’s just an escape.

To which I say, Amen and Hallelujah?

Because where in this world can we talk to a dragon or join in a physical battle against a dark lord? Where can we meet wondrous, immortal beings or talking animals? Where are there magical rings, mythical cups, or spaceships able to speed across galaxies?

Nowhere. Not in our visible world.

But sometimes that sort of wondrous encounter is what we most need. We need to go on an adventure with people who are like us but live in a world nothing like ours. We need to unmoor ourselves from our physical reality and gain distance and perspective.

When we do—when we allow ourselves to be drawn into a fantasy story—we gain new eyes to see what is true, honorable, just, and commendable. We share wild adventures and experience impossible things.

In the process, we find out what our own adventures mean and what’s possible in our lives that we never imagined before. We discover good and evil matter and the stand we take for one or the other matters. We learn the little things we do make a difference. We realize some things are true and others are deceptions.

All this from stories. And it doesn’t hurt that, while we’re gaining this fresh perspective, we’re also having a lot of fun. Stories in these genres can be a never-ending source of joy and insight. A necessary and refreshing escape.

I hope you’ll escape with me.

ABOUT EILEEN R HICKMAN

Eileen’s favorite books are mostly Fantasy or Science Fiction, so it was a natural step for her to start writing these same kinds of stories. She writes tales that bridge the divide between the two genres–a lot of Fantasy elements with a Science Fiction vibe. She pushes her characters to search for deepest truth and thrills with them at the meaning and wonder they discover in the process.

When she’s not writing, she’s reading, gardening, or traveling from one end of the USA to the other and beyond. Whether its close to home or to exotic locals beyond the home shores, her camera goes with her. She’s never happier than when her view-finder reflects breathtaking natural scenes or historical sites filled with old ruins.
